  1. It’s a common procedure

Wisdom teeth extraction has been had by a lot of people. It occurs when a person is a teen or young adult more often than not but it can occur whenever deemed necessary. There can be a variety of reasons that they have to come out, coming in at the wrong angle including being impacted. They have gum disease or cavities and your mouth isn’t large enough to accommodate them.

  1. Before the surgery you can ask questions

Impacted wisdom teeth removals are still a pretty major procedure despite being common. You’ll be able to talk to the oral surgeon to ask any questions you may have before the process begins. As well as any medications you take, you’ll also talk about any health problems you may have. You’ll also be able to talk about the kind of anesthesia that will be administered at this point. You may be put completely to sleep or either be numbed out locally.

  1. Time taken by surgery is not too long

On average, wisdom teeth removal near me surgery takes around 30-45 minutes. You will be given a local anesthetic, it will be during the actual surgery which may include a shot of Novocain into the gums and nitrous oxide to stay relaxed during the surgery.

During the surgery, if you are being put to sleep this may include being hooked to an IV. They will get into your body through a gas mask and that will administer the drugs. You’ll be asleep for the entire procedure and may not wake up for an hour or longer after the wisdom teeth extraction in either case.

The oral surgeon may have to cut into the gums or the bones to get the teeth out. Stitches will be sewn in to close the wounds if this happens. After a couple of days, these generally dissolve. To absorb the blood that will occur with this procedure, you’ll probably also have gauze stuffed into your mouth.

  1. Post-surgery process

After the surgery how you feel will depend on the type of anesthesia you received. You may feel well enough to drive yourself home if you had a local injection. You will need someone to drive you home if you were put to sleep.

You will be sore after the surgery. Even though it was simple again it was still a major extraction. On your face, placing ice will help reduce swelling. To exercise the muscles in your jaw and keep them loose, you may also be advised to use heat and open and close your mouth gently.

For a while, you’ll have to eat soft foods because of the pain. You have to advise that you drink plenty of fluids and until the next day doesn’t brush your teeth. From the doctor, you’ll receive medication for the swelling and wisdom tooth pain and you should take these as advised.

Teeth removal can be a daunting prospect but it is also incredibly common. By following the doctor’s instructions and knowing what to expect can ease a lot of discomforts. Contact a local dentist near me if you have any questions about the process.
